Course Description
This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles, skills, and applications within the dynamic field of health science. This course encompasses a diverse range of topics, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, safety practices, phlebotomy, and healthcare systems, providing a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing careers in healthcare or related fields. The curriculum blends theory with hands-on applications, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving. Students participate in diverse activities, including lab work, clinical simulations, and real-world case studies, enhancing their comprehensive grasp of health science concepts.
Course Objectives
- Gain knowledge of career paths and educational opportunities
- Demonstrate personal and social responsibilities needed to obtain and retain employment
- Improve or enhance math, reading, and writing skills through various classroom assignments and embedded English and math assignments
- Be exposed to the current theories and techniques in Health Related Occupations
- Gain knowledge of basic body structure and function and their relationship to each other
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations required for a variety of health occupations
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of infection control, disease prevention, and disease processes
- Demonstrate personal management skills
- Demonstrate professional conduct in both the classroom and health care settings
- Demonstrate effective communication verbally, non-verbally, and written with patients, family members, staff, and in small and large group situations
- Implement a career search and develop career goals
- Exhibit behavior which indicates an attitude of respect for residents, coworkers, and fellow citizens
- Apply the principles of personal hygiene and physical and mental health to self and others
- Identify the nurse assistant’s role as it fits into the organizational structure of a long-term health facility
- Identify responsibilities of the nurse assistant to the resident and health care team.
- Give nursing care using basic skills and techniques in performing uncomplicated nursing procedures according to program standards
- Administer nursing care to residents based on a plan of care and/or direction from charge personnel
- Exhibit attitudes and behaviors that indicate respect for resident’s rights in assisting residents with their activities of daily living. • Assist residents who are handicapped to return to or maintain health potential
